Power Markets

The energy transition

The global energy transition is a complex but vital endeavour that will span decades, yet one ICIS believes is laden with opportunity. We are here to help our customers not just compete throughout the energy transition, but to thrive in it. And nowhere is the transition more visible than in power markets.

Increased complexity

The low-carbon revolution is driving rapid transformation across Europe’s power markets. The growth of renewable energy coupled with the phasing out of fossil-fuels and nuclear power means electricity prices are more volatile than ever. Rapid growth in cables connecting different markets means fundamental drivers in one region can strongly influence price movements in others; while the ever-increasing integration of gas, carbon and power adds another level of complexity.

Turning threat into opportunity

To turn the global energy transition from threat to opportunity means understanding and anticipating these complex price movements.

Having a holistic view that connects power markets is vital to optimise your resources. It is no longer enough to only follow the markets you actively trade. You also need to know what is happening across Europe and even further afield.

Mixed plastic waste

Gain a holistic view across emerging plastic waste feedstocks for the chemical and mechanical recycling and burn-for-energy sectors

The growth of the chemical recycling sector is redrawing the map of the mixed waste plastic market in Europe.

Mixed plastic waste grades are a key feedstock for chemical recyclers looking to avoid competition with mechanical recycling and utilise material that historically would have been incinerated, landfilled, or used in burn-for-energy applications. This potentially allows the circularity of a number of waste grade that were not previously recycled.

Nevertheless, it is a common misconception that chemical recycling can take any and all types of plastic waste, and there are still a number of technical requirements for waste input depending on which chemical recycling process is used.

Pyrolysis for example, typically requires the minimisation of chlorine content (typically to 0.1% or less) due to its corrosive effect, the removal of PET because it oxygenates the process and does not depolymerise using pyrolysis, and the avoidance of nylon and flame retardants.

At the same time, shortages and high prices of monomaterial recycled plastics have led waste managers and mechanical recyclers to explore the use of mixed plastic waste to make up shortfalls, particularly for non-packaging applications such as construction. Improvements in sorting technology are expected to widen the range of materials mechanical recyclers can utilise in the mid-term.

This is creating greater competition for mixed plastic waste and causing fundamental shifts in the Europe market place. Players are being forced to adapt at speed in what can often be an opaque and difficult to understand landscape.

The mixed plastic waste (Europe) service provides comprehensive pricing and market coverage of key feedstocks for the chemical recycling sector and emerging feedstock for mechanical recycling such as mixed polyolefins, high plastic content and high calorie content refuse derived fuel (RDF) bales and unsorted materials recovery facility (MRF) waste.

The service also includes comprehensive analysis of chemical and mechanical recycling markets, sorting and waste management, investment and macroeconomic trends, legislative and technology developments, pyrolysis oil, and the burn-for-energy sector.

All new and emerging markets are inherently volatile, doubly so when coupled to new technologies and complex supply chains serving multiple competing sectors. The mixed plastic waste pricing service sits alongside our mechanical and chemical recycling supply trackers to give you the actionable insights you need to adapt your strategy, minimise risk and position yourself at the forefront of these key developing market sectors.

ICIS has been covering recycled polymer and plastic waste markets since 2006 and holds multiple price benchmarks across the major recycled polymers of R-PET, R-PE and R-PP, as well as across virgin chemical markets. Our experience gives us the insight to properly contextualise and evaluate the latest market developments and industry trends in a trustworthy, timely and impartial manner.

Natural gas

The market leader in gas market intelligence

Changing regulations and infrastructure, supply (via pipeline and LNG vessels), fluctuating demand, and storage dynamics are all drivers of global gas markets. This presents a complex picture where a shift in one variable can impact prices or change key dynamics instantly. With so much to keep track of, it’s essential to have constant access to reliable information.

We were the first company to assess European gas markets and have continued to extend our coverage over the last 25 years. Our unwavering track record of delivering reliable price assessments, combined with our independent and transparent methodology, means that the majority of gas market participants use our data as the benchmark for the Title Transfer Facility (TTF), the most liquid gas hub in Europe, in the Netherlands.

As a result of increased interdependence between US LNG production, Europe and the LNG markets in Asia the TTF gas benchmark has become more interconnected as a global gas index.

We support your decision-making with data-led, forward-looking analysis, as well as regulatory and infrastructure updates to complete the picture.

Solutions

Our global analysis covers cover all European gas markets, as well as US gas fundamentals including the US Henry Hub futures market, US LNG exports, Asian gas demand markets and regional arbitrage opportunities. We also report intra-day and early evening closing price assessments with supporting market commentary for all major European gas hubs, production and supply fundamentals plus forward-thinking analysis of wholesale gas market trends.

Base Oils

Reacting to capacity changes and demand shifts.

The base oils market is sensitive to downstream demand for automobiles and fuel. Upstream vacuum gas oil (VGO) and crude values are a secondary price driver.

A global demand shift from Group I to Groups II and III has led to rationalisation of capacity and increased reliance for wax on China. The use of electric vehicles is reducing demand for passenger car motor oils (PCMO). Global capacity of base oils generally exceeds demand, but supply chains can be impacted by fuel prices, cargo capacity, transportation costs, weather and natural disasters, and trade barriers. Failure of one or two production plants can affect global availability.

ICIS base oils reports are available for the Americas, North Asia, Southeast Asia (including India), and Middle East and Europe (including Russia/Baltic), and P-Wax reports are available for Asia-Pacific region, Europe, and the USA.

These reports analyse actual price levels, place market trends in a historical context and include a summary outlook. Navigating change

In opaque markets characterised by price volatility, it is challenging to know the fair price for a commodity.

Save money

Raw material price forecasts produced by highly experienced industry experts with in-depth knowledge of the plastics packaging markets and all relevant market players, built using state of the art modelling techniques that are unbiased, balanced and reliable.

Minimise negotiating

Raw materials prices are inherently volatile, which means costs and profits are uncertain. Indexing procurement and sales contracts to the same index locks in margins, allowing plastic converters and their customers to define profitability for the term of the contract.
