Working with us

Serving Clients

The key to our client service is a combination of our people, rigorous problem solving, industry expertise, and the tools to support execution and make change happen.

Consulting

Our consultants work in many roles to solve our clients’ toughest issues, whether as a trusted advisor or a hands-on coach. They integrate world-class problem solving, industry expertise, and proprietary tools and capabilities to create change and lasting impact.

Client Capabilities Network

Client capabilities professionals work on some of the most meaningful challenges of our time, in an agile and targeted way. They are core to our firm’s R&D, developing new knowledge and building and refining proprietary capabilities, including assets and data. Our portfolio includes state-of-the-art research, asset-backed and rapid diagnostics, capability building, benchmarking, and support during transformations.

Analytics

We bring the latest analytical techniques along with a deep understanding of industry dynamics and corporate functions to help clients create the most value from data and unlock the potential of AI. Our team of analytics experts include data scientists, data architects, machine learning engineers, and advanced-analytics consultants.

Implementation

Implementation consultants collaborate with clients to help them deliver measurable and sustainable improvements in metrics such as productivity, cost, quality, and time to market. We help strengthen and align leadership, transform processes, optimize management practices and build capabilities.

Transformation

Our transformation colleagues are dedicated to helping organizations unlock their full potential through holistic, enduring, large-scale transformation. We help organizations drive growth, build capabilities for the future, and sustain performance at every level. Our work also includes business turnarounds.

Digital

To help clients accelerate the impact of digital transformation, we work with them to prototype ideas, test them with real customers, and quickly adapt and implement the solution. Combining data science, human-centered design, and rapid-development techniques, we help clients deliver breakthrough products, experiences, and businesses.

Design

We combine world-class design talent with a multi-disciplinary approach to help clients move ahead at scale and speed. Our work includes product, service, and experience design across physical, digital, and spatial platforms. We use design to differentiate and drive growth for our clients by identifying and creating value for their customers.

Careers Beyond Consulting

Agile coaches, scrum masters and executive assistants. Software engineers, lawyers and accountants. Solution delivery analysts, knowledge specialists and communications professionals. The different roles, paths and opportunities at McKinsey are endless.

Our firm has thousands of talented colleagues around the world who bring their skills, experience, and perspectives to roles that go beyond traditional consulting. These colleagues create meaningful impact and do work that matters - both directly and indirectly for our clients.

Advanced professional degree candidates

Working toward your advanced degree means you already have many of the skills you need to succeed here: problem-solving, intellectual curiosity, industry knowledge and technical expertise.

Some people with advanced professional degrees leverage their training in related fields; for example, many doctors now work at McKinsey on healthcare reform, in our Pharmaceutical & Medical Products Practice or in our Healthcare Solutions Practice. Others use McKinsey to explore new areas and grow both personally and professionally.

APD candidates typically join us as associates or junior associate consultants (positions vary based on office and experience), or in more specialized positions in analytics, digital, or other technology sectors. Our roles include generalist consulting, practice consulting - focused on a specific function or industry (e.g., digital, implementation, operations), and technology roles such as data scientists, software engineers, product managers, data engineers, designers, agile coaches, or digital marketers.

If you are pursuing a master’s degree and have earned an undergraduate degree fewer than four years ago, you will join as a business analyst if you pursue a consulting role. If you hold a bachelor’s degree and have at least four years of work experience, or completed or expect to complete your master's degree within four years of receiving your bachelor's degree, you will join as an associate. For specialized roles, your tenure will vary by position.

APD candidates may also consider applying for an associate or business analyst internship position depending on their degree or work experience, usually for the summer prior to the penultimate year of their degree. Medical students, interns, and residents may apply up to two years in advance of completing their degree.

Most APDs apply for full-time positions during the summer or fall prior to the penultimate year of their degree to take part in interviews in the late summer or early fall. Timing may vary by region. We recommend checking your campus calendar for specific dates and deadlines. Hiring for specialized roles may happen through either campus interviews or a separate process, so please check with your recruiter for more details.

Experienced Professionals

Leverage your knowledge to create change that matters

We look for creative thinkers and problem solvers from many fields and professions, such as technology, finance, government, engineering, law, the military, and medicine.

There are four aspects we consider as we look for new people to join the firm, in addition to any industry or functional expertise. They include: personal impact, entrepreneurial drive, problem solving skills, and inclusive leadership.

Whatever your background, we have the scale, training, people, and technology to help you deepen your skills, explore new areas, and do meaningful work.

Experienced professionals join our organization in virtually every role, as client-facing technologists, consultants, knowledge or research professionals, or in important internal roles

We look for strong problem solvers with potential—we will teach you the rest.

Undergraduates typically join as business analysts or fellows as an integral part of our client service teams. Some stay for two or three years before attending a graduate school or leaving for further work experience; some stay on and move directly into a postgraduate school role.

You’re intellectually curious, asking and answering questions others don’t, and testing solutions others haven't thought of trying. Your business knowledge can be invaluable in solving client problems.

MBA graduates typically join us as associates, working either as generalists or practice consultants if they have an area they’d like to focus on, and increasingly they may join our analytics, digital, or other tech teams.
