About Us

150 Years of Delivering Excellence

Mott MacDonald is one of the largest wholly employee-owned engineering, management and development consultancies in the world, with a heritage traced back to the 1860s. From the earliest engineering pioneers who laid the foundations of modern infrastructure to the present generation of technical specialists, project managers, economists and creative thinkers, the pursuit of innovation and excellence has been constant. We plan, design, deliver and maintain the transport, energy, water, defence and security, and buildings infrastructure that is integral to people's daily lives — and we do it as a business that belongs entirely to the people who work for it. That independence shapes everything: how we make decisions, how we invest in our people, and how we focus relentlessly on long-term quality over short-term convenience. As signatories to the UN Global Compact, we are committed to responsible business practices and to contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals across every market in which we operate.

Who we are

Passionate Problem-Solvers, Constructive Creatives, Inspiring Innovators

We are a global network of engineers, scientists, planners, economists, environmental specialists and digital experts united by a shared purpose: to use our expertise for the benefit of our clients and the communities they serve. With a senior professional retention rate of over 90%, our collective depth of experience is genuinely unmatched — and our employee ownership model means every one of us has a personal stake in the quality of what we deliver. Our people are nurtured through industry-leading learning and development programmes, professional networks and regular excellence fora that keep ideas fresh and skills sharp. From early-career graduates to Mott MacDonald Fellows, we are a team of passionate, purpose-driven individuals who believe that improvement is always possible — and who take action to make it happen.

What we do

Global Expertise. Local Impact.

We apply technical excellence and digital innovation across six core markets — Buildings, Defence and Security, Energy, Environment and Society, Transport, and Water — delivering engineering, management and development services that transform our clients' businesses, their communities and the wider world. On the engineering side, our capabilities span architecture, bridges, tunnels, geotechnics, building structures and services, transport planning, urban design and water networks. Our management services cover project and programme management, cost and commercial management, digital consulting, risk and planning, procurement, strategic asset management, economics, policy and regulation, and more. Through our development practice, we work with governments, international donors and community groups on global health, education and skills, economic and social development, and climate change — delivering system-wide change that builds resilient communities. Whatever the challenge, we connect our services across our global network to add advantage for clients, their customers and society.

Our Purpose

Brilliant People Doing Brilliant Things

Our purpose is to use our expertise for the benefit of our clients and the communities they serve. That is not a tagline — it is the organising principle behind every decision we make. Social, economic and environmental changes are happening at a rapid rate, and our clients face increasingly complex challenges that demand genuinely innovative, expert-led solutions. Because we are independently owned, our clients know we make the right decisions for the right reasons: guided by purpose and values rather than by external shareholders. Through our social outcomes framework — focused on accessibility, inclusion, empowerment, resilience and wellbeing — we ensure every project is connected to real-world, real-people experiences. In 2023, we became the first engineering consultancy to be awarded the Social Value Management Certificate by Social Value International, a recognition that our commitment to building a better world goes beyond words.

Our Values

Delivering with PRIDE

Everyone at Mott MacDonald lives and works by Our Code and our PRIDE Values — a set of guiding principles that help us make great decisions, do the right thing and work with integrity, every day. PRIDE stands for Progress, Respect, Integrity, Drive and Excellence. Progress means we embrace change, create new opportunities and commit to continuous personal and professional development. Respect means we always consider the human and environmental impact of our actions, value all peoples and cultures, and advocate for equality, diversity and inclusion. Integrity means we deliver on our promises, act ethically and never tolerate bribery, corruption or dishonesty — treating safety, security and wellbeing as fundamental human rights. Drive means we continually expand our thinking, integrate all our skills as one Mott MacDonald and remain focused and persistent in reaching our goals. Excellence means we believe improvement is always possible, channelling relentless curiosity and cutting-edge skills to challenge and innovate at every opportunity. Our Code reinforces these values across five pillars: delivering with pride, respecting our people, conducting business with integrity, protecting our assets and reputation, and delivering value to society.

Why working with us

Your Place to Be Brilliant

Working with Mott MacDonald means tapping into over 150 years of engineering heritage, a global network of brilliant technical minds, and an ownership model that puts quality — not shareholder returns — at the centre of everything. Because we are employee-owned, our focus is uncompromisingly on excellence for our clients: we make decisions guided by purpose and values, with the stability and sustained growth that independence affords. Our senior professional retention rate of over 90% means our clients benefit from deep, compounding expertise on every project. We invest in industry-leading systems, technology and digital solutions — including our Moata digital platform — to see problems and possibilities more clearly, and to be more agile, efficient and effective. Our framework for innovation management has been recognised by the British Standards Institution, who awarded us their Kitemark certification. And our track record of award wins — from Glassdoor's Best Places to Work to the FT Best Employers UK and the CIBSE Building Performance Awards — reflects a culture where doing great work and doing right by people go hand in hand.

Sustainability

Accelerating Sustainable Outcomes

We recognise our responsibility as a global consultancy for tackling the world's biggest challenges, and we are committed to making a positive difference through every activity we undertake. Our approach to sustainability is informed by the UN Global Compact and the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. As a UNGC signatory, we implement the Ten Principles and contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with representatives from across our global business active in UNGC working groups on climate disclosures, sustainability reporting, nature, modern slavery and human rights. We maintain an environmental management system certified to ISO 14001:2015 and publish a Group carbon footprint report and carbon reduction plan. Our global network of climate, environment and social experts supports clients throughout every project lifecycle — helping them achieve genuine sustainability, build a strong reputation with investors and stakeholders, and develop innovative, cost-effective solutions. From designing net-zero electricity grids and offshore wind farms to engineering natural water treatment systems and advising on biodiversity and nature recovery, sustainability is not a service line — it is a lens we apply to everything.

Community & Impact

Unlocking Social Value, Everywhere We Operate

We are passionate about using our expertise for the benefit of the communities our clients serve, and we go further than the scope of any single commission to make that happen. Our social outcomes framework — built around accessibility, inclusion, empowerment, resilience and wellbeing — guides how we maximise the benefits we deliver on every project. In 2023, we became the first engineering consultancy to be awarded the Social Value Management Certificate by Social Value International, recognising our systematic approach to unlocking social value at scale. Beyond our projects, we support corporate social responsibility through charitable giving, partnership building, volunteering and pro-bono work, giving our colleagues flexibility and financial support to champion causes they care about. We invest in STEM initiatives, work experience programmes, graduate schemes, student placements and apprenticeships — particularly for groups typically under-represented in the workforce — and we only work with suppliers who align with our social policies and values, collaborating with local supply chains and social enterprises wherever we can.

Inclusion & Diversity

Everyone's Business, Everyone's Welcome

To us, equality, diversity and inclusion are more than just words. They are fundamental and fully ingrained qualities that we cannot operate without. When our teams are diverse, we better understand and meet the needs of our clients and communities across the world. The more inclusive and equitable our workplaces, the more our learning, innovation and excellence can flourish. As advocates of equality and equity, we maintain flexible, agile and accessible policies; open, transparent and fair communication systems; and targeted action to make sure everyone is represented. As drivers of diversity, we actively recruit a workforce that reflects the communities we serve, provide transparent career development pathways and harness the different experiences and perspectives within our team. As champions of inclusion, we build high levels of psychological safety, belonging, respect and fairness — empowering our leaders to develop their emotional intelligence and ensuring every line and project manager knows how to nurture their teams. Our recruitment process holds Clear Assured Platinum status, and we publish an annual pay gap report as part of our commitment to openness and accountability.
