About Us

Engineering Solutions for a Shared Future

Rooted in Denmark and active across Northern Europe, Africa and Southeast Asia, NIRAS is one of Scandinavia's leading engineering consultancies — and a firm shaped by something rarer than technical capability alone: a Scandinavian heritage of trust, collaboration and long-term thinking. As a foundation-owned and employee-owned company, we are not driven by short-term returns. The NIRAS Foundation, established in 1976, holds the majority shareholding of the NIRAS Group and ensures that our profits are reinvested into the company, into education, and into the global recognition of engineering excellence. That ownership structure is not a footnote — it is the reason we prioritise responsible growth, meaningful impact and enduring partnerships over everything else. With nearly 70 years of expertise, a team of 3,000 specialists across 63 offices, and over 9,000 active projects, we have built one of the broadest engineering platforms in Northern Europe. Yet our ambition has never been to be the biggest firm in the room. It has always been to be the most trusted.

Who we are

3,000 Specialists. One Shared Ambition.

We are engineers, scientists, advisors, project managers and development consultants — united by a flat, trust-based organisation that empowers people to make the right decisions without layers of bureaucracy. Our colleagues are purpose-driven professionals who bring deep specialist knowledge across building, infrastructure, energy, water, environment, pharma, food and beverage, offshore wind, ports and international development consulting. Approximately 90% of our staff say they have exciting and meaningful tasks, are proud to work at NIRAS and are happy to come to work — a reflection of a culture where good management, challenging projects and a strong sense of community are not aspirations but daily realities. We are recognised for working in close collaboration with our clients, leveraging synergies across disciplines and applying our multiple competences in the most effective way. When specialist expertise is not available in-house, we partner with trusted external experts to ensure the right solution always reaches the client. We listen. We learn. We deliver.

What we do

Excellence in Project Delivery Across Disciplines

NIRAS delivers engineering and advisory solutions across almost every field of built and natural infrastructure. In building and construction, we guide complex projects from concept to completion — including data centres, innovation campuses and pharma facilities. In infrastructure and transport, we design tunnels, airports, bridges and coastal defences. In energy, we advise on offshore wind, solar, bioenergy, Power-to-X, green hydrogen, strategic energy planning and the full electrification of industry and transport. In water, we engineer water treatment plants, manage flood risk and lead climate adaptation programmes. In environment and ecology, we conduct environmental impact assessments, manage soil and groundwater contamination, and protect nature and aquatic ecosystems. In food and beverage and pharma and life science, we design world-class production facilities and decarbonisation roadmaps. And through our Development Consulting practice — active in over 30 countries across Africa, Asia Pacific, Latin America, the Middle East and Central and Eastern Europe — we support governments, international aid agencies and multilateral donors in building sustainable societies from the ground up. Digitalisation runs through everything we do, enabling us to handle ever more complex challenges through BIM, data platforms, simulation and digital futures tools aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

Our Purpose

Sustainable Progress of Society

Our purpose is as straightforward as it is demanding: sustainable progress of society. We believe that engineering, done with genuine rigour and responsibility, is one of the most powerful forces for positive change in the world. Every project we undertake — whether a grand waterworks for a capital city, a floating offshore wind farm, a climate-resilient coffee value chain in Uganda or a governance programme in a fragile economy — is an act of that belief made concrete. The NIRAS Foundation was established so that our profits would flow back into the advancement of engineering knowledge and the societies we serve. With that foundation beneath us, we are free to focus on what matters: building a balanced, resilient future, one project at a time.

Our Values

We Listen. We Learn. We Deliver.

These three principles are not a tagline — they are the operational heartbeat of NIRAS. We listen because every client, every community and every project starts from its own unique point, and our advice is always tailored to reflect that reality. We learn because the complexity of the challenges we face demands constant curiosity, cross-disciplinary collaboration and a genuine commitment to lifelong development — supported by specialist networks, university partnerships, an active PhD programme and a dedicated competence development fund. We deliver because, in the end, what counts are results: solutions that can be measured, tested and bring lasting value to business and society. Our flat, trust-based organisation keeps us agile and accountable, ensuring the distance between decision and action is always short.

Why working with us

A Trusted Partner in a Complex World

Clients choose NIRAS because we bring something that cannot be replicated simply by assembling a large team: nearly 70 years of practical, resilient engineering across almost every discipline, delivered through a culture that genuinely prizes trust, collaboration and accountability. Our foundation-owned structure means we think in decades, not quarters — so we are invested in the long-term outcomes of every engagement, not just the deliverable at hand. Our flat organisation keeps decision-making fast and our people empowered. Our global reach across 63 offices and more than 30 countries means we can bring local knowledge and contextual sensitivity to any challenge, anywhere. And when a problem calls for expertise beyond our own, we say so — and we bring the right partners in. We embrace complexity, we apply science-based thinking, and we are honest about trade-offs. Whether a client is far along on their sustainability journey or just beginning, we help them take the next important step.

Sustainability

Science-Based Advice. Practical Solutions. Measurable Impact.

Sustainability at NIRAS is not a service line — it is a lens through which we approach every project and every internal decision. Our advice is grounded in science, driven by practical solutions and always honest about the trade-offs that come with ambitious sustainability targets. We help clients reduce their climate impact, strengthen resilience, meet regulatory requirements and create long-term business value across sectors from energy and water to food, pharma, offshore wind and international development. Internally, we hold ourselves to the same standard. NIRAS A/S is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement: a 50% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2026, carbon neutrality in scope 1 and 2 by 2030, and net-zero across scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2050. Our GREENsition initiative goes further still — over the next ten years, 13% of our annual profits will be invested directly into accelerating the green energy transition, spanning offshore wind, Power-to-X, smart grids, electrification of industry and green mobility. We report transparently on our climate account and continuously evolve our procurement, travel and resource use policies to minimise our own footprint. Because we believe that the most credible sustainability advisors are those who walk the talk.

Community & Impact

Building Capacity. Leaving No One Behind.

Community runs through NIRAS at every scale — from the employee associations and social clubs that bind our 3,000-strong team across 63 offices, to the development consulting programmes that have been transforming lives in some of the world's most challenging contexts for over 50 years. Through the NIRAS Foundation, we support PhD programmes, young scientists, the Royal Danish Geographical Society and the World Prize for Integrated Development — investing in the next generation of engineering and scientific talent. In our development consulting work, active across Africa, Asia Pacific, Latin America, the Middle East and Central and Eastern Europe, we partner with governments, international aid agencies and multilateral donors including the EU, World Bank, DANIDA, FCDO, GIZ and ADB to address the root causes of inequality, build institutional capacity, strengthen governance and deliver infrastructure that genuinely serves communities. We do not just deliver projects — we build the knowledge, systems and local capability to make those projects last.

Inclusion & Diversity

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: Every Individual Matters

At NIRAS, equity, diversity and inclusion are grounded in the firm conviction that every individual matters and that diverse perspectives genuinely enrich our organisation. Our global EDI policy sets the direction at group level, while local action plans ensure we respond to the specific legal, cultural and market contexts in which we operate — because meaningful inclusion is always contextual. We have set a 40/60 gender ambition at all levels of the organisation by 2030, with a concrete interim target of 33% female leaders by 2026. We are committed to equal pay, equal access to our talent programme and educational initiatives, and the active promotion of female role models and mentorship opportunities. We have signed the Diversity Pledge from the Confederation of Danish Industry and, locally, the Women's Empowerment Principles from the United Nations. Our commitment to the UN Global Compact and basic human rights principles underpins everything we do, whether we are working in a Scandinavian office or a fragile post-conflict economy. This is not compliance — it is culture.
