Career progression runs from Junior Consultant, working across a variety of clients under the supervision of a mission leader, through Senior Consultant, who operates autonomously on assignments, to Senior Supervisor, a transition stage into management that involves guiding younger consultants on complex assignments. From there, Managers lead missions, manage teams and coach consultants, while Senior Managers run several projects in parallel and take on a recognised role in the firm's client relationships and prominence in the market.

Training at Colombus covers both areas of technical expertise and the broader skills tied to today's societal challenges, so consultants keep building relevant capabilities as their career progresses. Everyone also benefits from a coaching scheme designed to support professional development and skill enhancement, which we see as a direct contributor to people's sense of fulfilment within the firm rather than a box-ticking exercise.

We look for consistency between a candidate's academic and career path, along with personality, convictions and listening skills. Our case-study interview presents a real mission scenario, but the exercise doesn't require in-depth knowledge of a specific industry or process — what matters is the candidate's questions and logical reasoning, not the polish of the final answer. Candidates are also assessed on their English level as part of the process.

The process opens with an HR telephone exchange, where a recruiter introduces the firm and gauges a candidate's motivations and potential. Next comes a discovery meeting with one or more consultants, assessing fit, background and expectations, followed by a case-study interview built around a real mission scenario to evaluate logical reasoning. The process closes with a validation interview to confirm mutual fit before an offer is made.

Colombus fully reimburses public transport subscriptions and provides electric bicycles nicknamed "Cococyclettes" to support daily commuting, alongside a corporate retirement scheme for long-term financial security. The firm also prioritises team life through regular activities, an internal seminar, a CSE (works council) and a sporting association, aiming to keep the working environment genuinely convivial rather than purely transactional.
